The Esseillon barrier
The fortified buildings of Esseillon (5km from La Norma) which collectively formed a barrier for the entire valley against the invading armies take you back in time to yesteryear. They tell the story of how continued attacks pushed the Sard people of the XIX century to build these impressive forts to protect themselves. 5 forts with the royal family names(Marie-Christine, Marie Thérèse, Charles-Albert, Charles-Félix et Victor-Emmanuel) were built between 1818 and 1834. Open for visits every day except Saturday. Donations accepted.
The Victor Emmanuel Fort
The 1rst « Savoyard discovery promenade»
On the Esseillon barrier, the Victor-Emmanuel fort is the main component of this new walk, open to every one, allying the discovery of a cultural heritage and game.
The scenario of this Savoyard discovery Promenade is the following :
During the Sardinian period of the years 1841-1842, an artillery man was in post in the fort of the Daybreak (Victor-Emmanuel). To spend time that seemed too long for him, he took notes in a pad. At the end of his two years garrison at the Esseillon Fort, he had to leave for another affectation...but the day of his departure he lost his pad ! He went back looking for it in the fort, but he never came back...
The legend says that he still wanders there and that sometimes, at the bottom of a corridor, we can perceive him...
A few years ago, during the fort renovation, a linen bundle* was discovered. Inside, the famous pad lost... Unfortunately pages are missing, in the linen bundle, there is also a knotted rope, a magnifying glass, a piece of mirror and a pencil.
A game course and a free course are proposed to visitors. The access is easy for strollers, seniors, accompanied wheelchairs.
To discover absolutely in family or with friends for an unforgettable adventure !
Parking in front of the fort on the old road CD 215.
